EXPLORING NEW DEPTHS IN STEM
SUBS in Schools Technology Challenge™ is the result of collaboration between REA, the Department of Defence and industry stakeholders including the Australian Submarine Corporation and Saab Australia.
It was conceived in response to the Australian Government’s announcement of the $50 billion Future Submarine Program. It is the world’s first in-class submarine design competition.
REA took the proven framework of our F1 in Schools program – in which industry-standard technology is made available in the classroom. Students develop a wide range of skills from design, engineering and manufacturing to the ‘soft skills’ sought after by industry (project management, teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, communication). We then added the complexities of underwater design, coding and electronics.
Students design either a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) or a submarine which they must operate. Alternatively they can build a three-dimensional virtual scale model of living quarters in a futuristic submarine.
The fundamentals of SUBS in Schools are equipping young people to take part in the new set of industries being developed as part of the Future Submarine Program.

Getting involved is easy. We are in the process of developing a Getting Started document that will step you through the process of establishing and running SUBS in Schools. Until this is ready, Call REA so we can assist or we connect you to other teachers involved in the program who will be able to share knowledge, experience and resources.
Schools wanting to undertake the SUBS in Schools program must register online. We will then include you in all the appropriate emails, newsletters and communications that will help you get started in SUBS in Schools.
To be able to participate in State or National competitions all teams MUST be registered prior to their first competition event and prior to the published team registrations deadline. In addition, a Challenge Agreement Form MUST be completed by the supervising teacher, parent/guardian where applicable and returned to REA prior to the cut off dates.
There are no fees associated with School Registrations. Fees will only apply to those teams that represent their region at a State or National Final.
The registration process MUST be undertaken by teachers ONLY.
For assistance with schools or team registration please email [email protected] or call 1300 204 478.
Any School delivering REA STEM initiatives within their school, irrespective of whether they intend to register teams in the competition MUST register their school by the deadline date. School Registration is FREE.
Any School wishing to enter teams into the competition must register their teams by the advertised date each year.
At events directly managed by REA, which included State and National Finals there are registration fees that apply for each team which will assist in funding the venue hire, supply of expo style booths and trestle tables (where relevant) and administration of the events.
It is each team’s responsibility to raise the sponsorship required to fund the competition phase, including Registration Fees.
